you have questions... we have answers

How do I refer a patient?

It's simple: Just call our Patient Priority Line at 833-672-8767 and speak to one of our burn experts to get the process stated. We are committed to caring for every patient, regardless of the severity of their injury, insurance status or other factors.

How do I contact someone about my appointment?

To schedule your appointment or if you have questions or concerns about your appointment, please call us at 601-769-2876. If we are unable to answer your call immediately, please leave a message and your call will be returned within 24 hours.

What time do you open? When should I arrive ? Can I eat or drink on the day of my appointment?

Our specialized burn center cares for patients on a 24/7 basis. Our outpatient clinic opens at 8 a.m. We take walk-ins for new patients only, every weekday morning. Plan to be at the clinic when we open, but no later than 10 am.  New patients should not have anything to eat or drink after midnight. However, you may take a pain pill and your other routine medications with a sip of water on the morning of your appointment.

If you have a scheduled appointment time, plan to arrive a few minutes early. If you are more than 15 minutes late, your appointment may be rescheduled. Unless otherwise instructed, you may eat and drink as usual on the day of your follow-up appointments. You may take all routine medications, and we also suggest you take a pain pill within one hour of your appointment.

What paperwork should I plan to bring with me?

You should bring appropriate identification and insurance cards, if applicable. In addition, if you have any x-rays (copied on a disc) or other medical documents related to your case, please plan to bring them. In addition, if your injury happened on the job, please bring the name and number of your employer.

Once I arrive at Baptist Medical Center, how do I find the clinic?

Enter through the south entrance (women’s tower on the back side of the hospital) and walk toward the elevators on the right. The clinic door will be straight ahead between the elevators.

Can I eat or drink on the day of my appointment?

New patients should not have anything to eat or drink after midnight. However, you may take a pain pill and your other routine medications with a sip of water on the morning of your appointment.

Unless otherwise instructed, you may eat and drink as usual on the day of your follow-up appointments. You may take all routine medications, and we also suggest you take a pain pill within one hour of your appointment.

Will I have surgery as part of my clinic appointment?

You will be evaluated during your visit by one of our experienced providers who will determine the most appropriate treatment plan. This may or may not include surgery.  You should plan to have someone who could drive you home, just in case surgery is deemed necessary during your visit.

What am I supposed to do with my dressings?

Please follow the instructions for wound care given to you at the time of discharge from the hospital or clinic. Our dressings are very specialized and often cannot be found at your local drugstore. If your dressings become soiled or fall off, please contact the clinic for further instructions. If it is after-hours or on the weekend, you may replace your dressing with any non-stick gauze from the drugstore, until you can call for further instructions.

What about my pain?

Please take any prescribed pain medications only as directed. You have been prescribed the maximum number of narcotic pills we legally can, according to guidelines and regulations. If you run out of pills, we may not be able to prescribe more. You can supplement your medication with over-the-counter Ibuprofen. Elevate the extremity above the level of the heart as much as possible. If your pain is still unmanageable, call the clinic for further instructions.

Where can I get a list of burn resources to help me or my family member in burn recovery?

You may request additional assistance regarding education, psychosocial resources, etc., from clinic staff at the time of your visit.

Can I donate my skin to help burn patients?

At this time, there are no skin banks or medical facilities in America who accept skin from live donors. However, our burn center is always in the need for blood, so we would encourage you to consider making a donation to your local blood bank.

What is ABLS certification and why is it important?

Advanced Burn Life Support programs support emergency and mass casualty preparedness focusing on triage, burn survivability, patient transportation, and patient treatment. It represents an elevated and specific course of instruction for burn care professionals. At MBHRC, our Medical Director, Advanced Practice Providers, Burn Service Director, Burn Program Manager, Burn Clinic Manager and many of our nursing staff are ABLS certified. In addition, we are home to the only certified ABLS instructors in Mississippi.
